A Journey to Excellence

Professionalism in Action: A Case Study

In a bustling Long-Term Care facility, a new Executive Director faced the daunting task of revitalizing a disengaged team. Through strategic implementation of the Touch of CLASS framework, the facility saw a remarkable transformation. Staff morale improved, turnover rates decreased, and resident satisfaction soared. This case study highlights the pivotal role of professionalism in achieving sustainable success.

Understanding the Challenges

Leadership and Culture Gaps in Long-Term Care

Despite advancements in healthcare, many Long-Term Care facilities continue to grapple with leadership and cultural challenges. The fast-paced environment often leads to communication breakdowns and a lack of cohesive vision. These gaps result in operational inefficiencies and increased costs, ultimately affecting the quality of care provided to residents. Addressing these issues is crucial for fostering a thriving, supportive environment.

Bridging the Gap

Leadership gaps often stem from insufficient training and support, leaving managers ill-equipped to inspire and guide their teams. Cultural gaps, on the other hand, arise from misaligned values and inconsistent practices. Bridging these gaps requires a concerted effort to instill a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Leadership Behind the Framework

Touch of CLASS is delivered by Wayne Newell, a Nova Scotia–based corporate trainer and senior operations leader with more than 40 years of professional experience across property management, hospitality, finance, construction, and long-term care.

For the past 24 years, Wayne has focused on training and advising leadership teams, working with more than 4,000 professionals in finance and strategic management roles. His most impactful contribution emerged from a large-scale long-term care turnaround—where a struggling facility increased occupancy from 35% to 92% within 17 months, while significantly reducing turnover and stabilizing operations.

That transformation was achieved without increasing staffing levels or operating costs. Instead, it centered on five critical, observable employee behaviours: commitment, leadership, attitude, service standards, and team support. These principles became the foundation of the CLASS framework, now delivered through Touch of CLASS to support sustainable culture change in long-term care environments.

Wayne’s approach is practical, leadership-driven, and grounded in operational realities—designed for organizations that require professionalism, accountability, and measurable results.
